Chemours Company has disposed of contaminated waste materials improperly, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality determined and as a result issued the company a notice of violation and intent to enforce, the agency said.
The department is considering civil penalties against Chemours after it found the company didn't conduct necessary testing to determine PFAS contamination that before it transported soil and yard waste from its Fayetteville Works facility — which is known for having PFAS contamination — to an unlined landfill, the agency said in a news release on June 18.
“We will not tolerate irresponsible actions or attempts to cut corners that risk further impacts to the surrounding communities and to water quality,” Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Michael S. Regan said in the news release.
The DEQ has ordered Chemours to retrieve the material and, as a precaution against contamination, also excavate the soil from the area surrounding it from the unlined landfill, environmental officials said in the news release. Additionally, Cheamours has 15 days to of the notice to submit describing its retrieval activities and final disposal location of the contaminated waste, and a plan that outlines what steps it will follow to ensure proper waste disposal.
