The Fayetteville City Council convened on Feb. 12, 2024, to discuss important matters concerning the city. The meeting began with a prayer from Pastor Michael Mathis and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mayor Mitch Colvin and the City Council.

During the meeting, Mayor Colvin made two announcements and recognitions. Firstly, he acknowledged February as Black History Month and urged everyone to embrace diversity and learn from it. Secondly, he congratulated Fayetteville native Joshua Williams and the Kansas City Chiefs on their second Super Bowl Championship.

The agenda for the meeting was unanimously approved by the council members. Council Member Derrick Thompson motioned to approve the agenda, which was seconded by Council Member Mario Benavente.

The council then proceeded to address eight items on the Consent Agenda, which are routine items passed with a single motion and vote. These items included the approval of meeting minutes from previous sessions and the consideration of various projects and initiatives.

During the meeting, a public forum was held, allowing residents to directly address the council on specific issues. Some of the topics discussed included race relations, confusion regarding an easement, an apology to the Fayetteville Police Department, a monument proposal in the Northside Cemetery, homelessness issues, funding for the Office of Community Safety, and concerns about tennis court safety. Due to the number of individuals who signed up to speak, the public forum was extended by three minutes to accommodate the last speaker.

Administrative reports were also presented for the council's review and information. Council Member Deno Hondros motioned to move the Cool Spring Downtown District's Second Quarter Fiscal Year 2024 Report to a future work session, which was unanimously approved.

The meeting adjourned at 7:29 p.m. The next City Council Regular Meeting is scheduled for Feb. 26, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fayetteville City Hall's Council Chambers. The March Work Session will take place on March 4, 2024, at 2 p.m. in the same location. The meetings are broadcast live on Spectrum Channel 7, FayTV.net, and the FayTV app. Meeting agendas, supporting documentation, and minutes are available to the public.
